You want to become a sex therapist or sexuality counselor… but how?
Let The Buehler Institute Help You Fulfill Your Career Goals...
Our Blended Learning Program* combines the best of two worlds, excellent online education plus two live workshops in beautiful Newport Beach, CA. This program is designed for licensed psychotherapists or for students or interns in a program leading to a degree that allows you to become a licensed psychotherapist. Allied healthcare professionals (RNs, NPs, PTs, nurse midwives) who wish to counsel patients are also welcome to attend.
We also have a Core Knowledge Program ** that covers 75 of the 90 AASECT hours* required in that area of study. You are welcome to take that program first, then add the Blended Learning Extension***.
Or perhaps you are looking for our new International Program that is especially for professionals living in most every country besides the US, Canada, Mexico, and Israel.*
There is a huge need for sex therapists and counselors to help the millions of individuals and couples with sexual problems. Therapists and counselors work in many settings, including private practice, pelvic health clinics, oncology clinics, LGBTQ centers, and more. This is a rich and fulfilling career for those who undertake the proper education and training.
The Buehler Institute is approved by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists as an organizational provider*, the American Psychological Association, the California Board of Registered Nurses, and the National Board of Certified Counselors to provide continuing education. The Blended Program provides all of the educational requirements for sex therapy and sexuality counseling certification.
*Fulfilling the educational requirements for AASECT certification does not guarantee certification. There are additional requirements for AASECT certification. Basically, they are:
1. You must be licensed to practice. Graduate students are welcome, but you cannot turn in your application for certification until you have your license.
2. You will need to attend a workshop called the Sexual Attitude Reassessment (SAR). This is an experiential workshop that you must take in person. It is separate from this program so that you can take it wherever and whenever it is convenient to you.
3. For sex therapist certification, you will need to perform 300 clinical hours of sex therapy under 50 hours of supervision under an AASECT supervisor. For sexuality counselors, you will need to perform 100 clinical hours of counseling under 30 hours of supervision under an AASECT supervisor. This is also separate from this program so that you can choose whomever you wish for supervision; many AASECT supervisors offer remote supervision by Skype, phone, etc. This gives you a broader perspective and may allow you to focus on a particular area, e.g., sexual pain, oncology, kinky sex, transgender clients, etc.
Our Blended Program in Sex Therapy was designed by Dr. Stephanie Buehler, licensed psychologist and AASECT-certified sex therapist and supervisor. Dr. Buehler is the author of several books, including What Every Mental Health Professional Needs to Know about Sex. She had prior careers as an educator for Los Angeles Unified School District and as a writer and editor for an educational publishing company. She designed the program to be accessible, practical, and most of all, thought-provoking. She is an active member of AASECT and other organizations. Dr. Buehler continues to maintain a private practice as an affiliate of Hoag Hospital.
WHAT IS BLENDED LEARNING ALL ABOUT?
If you want high quality learning in a convenient format, this is the program for you. In a year you can earn 150 credits in sex therapy training, all of the education you need for sex therapy certification by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists.****
The majority of the coursework is online. Log in whenever you’d like during each Module. Learn by listening to expert recorded lectures, watch thought-provoking documentaries, and participate in lively optional online discussions. Twice a month you can tune into a Google hangout with Dr. Stephanie Buehler to get questions answered and to reflect on what you’ve learned. (Hangouts are also optional, and will be recorded for later viewing.)
Course material is varied and includes lectures, documentaries, website visits, and journal articles. The material is introductory, but at a post-doctoral level to satisfy APA requirements. Courses are broken into sections, so you can choose to complete the entire course in one sitting--or just do as much as you have time for that day.
Twice you’ll come to beautiful Newport Beach, in Orange County, CA (located halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego--"where Disneyland is") for 3-day learning experiences to round out your sex therapy education. Weekends are offered four times a year and are interchangeable so you can select the dates that best suit your schedule. You can take a weekend training right away, or wait until you've completed some or all of the online learning. Breakfast included all three days to make life easier--and the Marriott Newport Beach does an outstanding job!
By the way, no smooshing you into a conference room with the other sardines! The weekend groups are intentionally small so that you get individual attention. It's more like attending a process group than a course. After all, therapy and counseling are intimate endeavors. Learning sex therapy should be an intimate experience, too!
****There are other requirements for becoming AASECT certified. For sex therapists, you must also complete a workshop called a SAR (Sexual Attitude Reassessment), 50 hours of supervision with an AASECT supervisor, and 300 clinical hours conducting sex therapy under supervision. The sexuality counselor must also complete a SAR, 30 hours of supervision with an AASECT supervisor, plus 100 clinical hours of counseling conducted under supervision. The SAR and supervision are not included in the Blended Program. This allows you to get a different perspective from other people working in the field of sexology, though you are welcome to take the SAR and supervision from Dr. Buehler depending on availability.
