The Comprehensive Sexology Program

Meet all AASECT Education Requirements!

There is a huge need for sex therapists and counselors to help the millions of individuals and couples with sexual problems. Therapists and counselors work in many settings, including private practice, pelvic health clinics, oncology clinics, LGBTQ centers, and more. This is a rich and fulfilling career for those who undertake the proper education and training.

With our Comprehensive Sexology Program, you can fulfill the 150 hours of educational requirements for certification by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) as a Sex Therapist or Sex Counselor! Created by world-renowned psychologist and sex therapist Dr. Stephanie Buehler, you will come away with information you can use right away in your practice!

You can get started right away, as 105 hours of coursework will be loaded to your account as soon as you enroll. You can log in whenever you'd like and complete these modules at your own pace. Course material is varied and includes lectures, documentaries, website visits, and journal articles. The material is introductory, but at a post-doctoral level to satisfy APA requirements. Courses are broken into sections, so you can choose to complete the entire course in one sitting--or just do as much as you have time for that day.

The other 45 hours will take place over two intensive weekend workshops. Weekends are offered six times a year and are interchangeable so you can select the dates that best suit your schedule. You can take a weekend training right away, or wait until you've completed some or all of the online learning. The weekend groups are kept small so that you get individual attention. After all, therapy and counseling are intimate endeavors. Learning sex therapy should be an intimate experience, too! Once you have completed the Comprehensive Sexology Program, you will receive a partially completed AASECT application that you can finish up and send to AASECT for approval.

Weekend Workshop Schedule
We will continue to offer "live" weekend workshops via Zoom. AASECT has indicated that synchronous workshops offered via a platform like Zoom will permanently count towards the "live" instruction component of AASECT certification.

Weekends take place Friday, Saturday, and most of the day on Sunday.
The enrollment is limited to no more than 20 people per weekend. It’s a great opportunity to learn intensely, be exposed to new ideas, and to network with fellow travelers on the path. The comment most often made on evaluations is, “I learned so much!”

Upcoming Weekend Dates are as follows, with most workshops being held live via Zoom.
Weekend A:
Theory and Practice of Sex Therapy and Physical Illness, Mental Illness, and Disabilities
June 24-26, 2022, online via Zoom
OR
December 2-4, 2022, online via Zoom
Weekend B:
Theory and Practice of Sex Therapy with Sexual and Gender Minorities
May 20-22, 2022, online via Zoom
OR
September 16-18, 2022, online via Zoom

COVID RESPONSE:
Due to the pandemic, AASECT is permitting synchronous, online education to count toward the live training requirements. We offer the same high quality content and guest instructors online as in our live training.  We will continue to offer live weekends via Zoom, though we hope to hold in-person meetings as long as it is safe to do so.  LearnSexTherapy.com follows all CDC guidelines when planning events.
If you have hesitated to take training because you are unable to travel, this is a good time to hop on board!
Weekend content is much more exciting than those titles—you’ll learn all about treating sex and relationship problems related to chronic illness, painful sex, and disabilities in Weekend A. In Weekend B, you’ll learn about assessment, treating LGBT couples, and working with transgender clients.

AASECT CERTIFICATION DETAILS
*Fulfilling the educational requirements for AASECT certification does not guarantee certification. There are additional requirements for AASECT certification. Basically, they are:

  1. You must be licensed to practice. Graduate students are welcome, but you cannot turn in your application for certification until you have your license.

  2. You will need to attend a workshop called the Sexual Attitude Reassessment (SAR). This is an experiential workshop that you must take in person. It is separate from this program so that you can take it wherever and whenever it is convenient to you.

  3. For sex therapist certification, you will need to perform 300 clinical hours of sex therapy under 50 hours of supervision under an AASECT supervisor. For sexuality counselors, you will need to perform 100 clinical hours of counseling under 30 hours of supervision under an AASECT supervisor. This is also separate from this program so that you can choose whomever you wish for supervision; many AASECT supervisors offer remote supervision by Skype, phone, etc. This gives you a broader perspective and may allow you to focus on a particular area, e.g., sexual pain, oncology, kinky sex, transgender clients, etc.

Our Comprehensive Sexology Program was designed by Dr. Stephanie Buehler, licensed psychologist and AASECT-certified sex therapist and supervisor. Dr. Buehler is the author of several books, including What Every Mental Health Professional Needs to Know about Sex. She had prior careers as an educator for Los Angeles Unified School District and as a writer and editor for an educational publishing company. She designed the program to be accessible, practical, and most of all, thought-provoking. She is an active member of AASECT and other organizations. Dr. Buehler continues to maintain a private practice in Orange County, CA where she is also Hoag Allied Health Staff.
