Re-Visioning Eroticism: Breaking Out of Functional Fixedness & Queering Sex
All of us grow up with narratives of how our bodies are supposed to function, how we are supposed to find pleasure, what we should want, and how we should make meaning of our bodies and our relationship to the erotic, but for queer as well as trans and non-binary individuals and relationships these narratives pose particular problems, as they fail to account for the heterogeneity of how we might express and embody the erotic. This two-hour class places these cultural scripts and mythosymbolic forms within the bounds of a cognitive bias, functional fixedness. We will cover various ways that providers might support, particularly through processes of mystification, breaking out of functional fixedness; promote curiosity; and imagine novel and expansive ways of engaging with—or re-visioning—how the erotic might move through and be experienced in our bodies. Please note that although course content is applicable to clients whether they are cis or trans, queer or straight, the class will emphasize queer and trans erotic embodiment and be taught from a queer and trans starting point.

Lucie Fielding, PhD, LPC, LMHC
Lucie Fielding, PhD, MA, LMHC (she/they; elle/iel) is a white, queer, non-binary trans femme, and a
therapist practicing in Charlottesville, VA and Seattle, WA. She received her MA in Counseling Psychology
at Pacifica Graduate Institute (2018). Lucie also holds a PhD in French from Northwestern University
(2008), where she specialized in histories of sexualities and erotic literature. Their background in
literature and history attunes them to the many ways that image, metaphor, and cultural scripts shape
and inform the narratives we carry with us as we move through the world as well as how these narratives
inscribe themselves on our bodies. In addition to their work as a therapist, Lucie is an Adjunct Professor
in the Sex Therapy Certificate Program at Antioch University-Seattle as well as a sex educator and
workshop facilitator who has taught for a range of groups, organizations, universities, and agencies.
