Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this program for?

This program is ideal for healthcare providers who want to know how to help their patients navigate sexual concerns due to gynecological and urological conditions, cancer, and sexual problems especially associated with pelvic and genital pain. Learning materials will include information about pharmacological interventions. In this program, you'll learn effective counseling techniques for patients and their partners.
Mental health providers are welcome to join us, and all coursework is AASECT, APA, NBCC, and CA BSN approved for CE credit and/or license renewal (in addition to our AMEDCO approval for CME credit for medical providers).

What is a sexuality counselor?

Sexuality counselors assist the patient to realistically resolve concerns through the introduction of problem solving techniques of communication as well as providing accurate information and relevant suggestions of specific exercises and techniques in sexual expression. Sexuality counseling is generally short term and client centered, focusing on the immediate concern or problem. Sexuality counseling can be individual or couple counseling. Sexuality counselors are trained to identify situations that require intensive therapy and to make appropriate referrals to a licensed sex therapist when needed.

Can I call myself a certified sex counselor or sex therapist after I finish this program?

A certificate and certification are different. At the end of this program you will receive a certificate of completion. You can call yourself an accredited sexual health provider, but you cannot use the Certified Sexuality Counselor credential as that is the AASECT certification. AASECT certification entails quite a bit more coursework, supervised clinical hours, and a unique 14 hour experiential workshop called a Sexual Attitude Reassessment (SAR). If you are interested in AASECT certification, then this course may still be the right option for you! If you are interested in AASECT certification, there will be an option to continue your studies and meet the AASECT educational requirements after completion of the ASHP Certificate if you so desire. See the next question for more details!

What is AASECT? And, what is needed for AASECT certification?

AASECT is the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. AASECT certification requirements include that you are licensed, take a workshop called a SAR (Sexual Attitude Reassessment), have 300 hours of clinical work over a minimum of 18 months, and 50 hours of supervision for sex therapists. Sexuality counselors have similar requirements but less hours of clinical work and supervision. To assist you in better understanding AASECT certification, we have recorded a FREE webinar about AASECT certification, which can be viewed by clicking here. Please go to the AASECT site for details or contact us for more information.

What if I am already enrolled in one of the other programs at

We can offer a discount to those enrolled in the Foundations of Sexology or Comprehensive Sexology program. Reach out to us at and we can walk you through your options.

Will the live conference be recorded?

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide recordings of the live conference. The continuing education provider agreement we have with AMEDCO stipulates that attendees must attend the virtual conference LIVE in order to receive CME credit.

Why do I have to wait to get started on the self-paced coursework? And why does the self-paced coursework need to be finished by December 31, 2022?

These are both due to the guidelines provided by AMEDCO, and it allows us to offer CMEs for those coursework. Our contract with AMEDCO stipulates that all attendees must start the coursework at the same time. We thought it would be best to start with the live conference. Our contract also states that we must have a firm end date for the self-paced coursework.
